Hello, I want to know when and if I should manually call optimize on elasticsearch. Hi, Calling optimize manually is indeed highly discouraged in general. The only time when you might want to run optimize manually is on read-only indices. For example it happens frequently when managing time-based indices, eg. once index per day: only one index is going to get writes and the other ones are read-only, so they can be safely optimized.
