# Questions about upgrading from 5.6 to 6.x (part 2)

Please note that this discussion came [at the request of a Elasticsearch personnel, via a conversation on Twitter](https://twitter.com/elastic/status/1017507430526115840), in relation to [a previous discussion regarding an upgrade from 5.6 to 6.x](https://discuss.elastic.co/t/questions-about-upgrading-from-5-6-to-6-x/134372).
So, the question that wasn't answered (at least not so that I understood it) is whether an upgrade from 5.6 to 6.x would affect the index data?
Also, since we need to change the schema (having removed the dependences on the `type` field), would those changes to the schema affect the index data?

It won't, no.

Data created in a 5.X cluster will work in a 6.X cluster.
If you want to create a new index then you will need to update the mapping (schema).
