# Rally 1.4.0 released

We have just released Rally 1.4.0. Some of the highlights of this release:

- The ability to use the [bundled JDK](https://github.com/elastic/rally/pull/853) that comes with Elasticsearch, rather than relying on a user supplied JVM.

- The addition of [subcommands to manage elasticsearch](https://github.com/elastic/rally/pull/830). Now you can manage the lifecycle of an Elasticsearch cluster with these new commands. These commands are **experimental and subject to change** in future versions.

- Finally, we have [added Python 3.8 support](https://github.com/elastic/rally/pull/815) to Rally.

There are also some breaking changes that can be viewed in [the migration docs](https://esrally.readthedocs.io/en/stable/migrate.html#migrating-to-rally-1-4-0).

## How to...?

- ... upgrade: `pip3 install --upgrade esrally`
- ... install: `pip3 install esrally`

Please follow the [quickstart](https://esrally.readthedocs.io/en/stable/quickstart.html) for a first time install.
