I'm curious to know what the recommended version of Elasticsearch is at this point.
And I want you to tell me why you recommend that version.
Let's take a look at how to get an Elasticsearch update policy.

8.17.2

It's the most advanced version. See

LogsDB (basic) With the general availability of the Elasticsearch specialized logsdb index mode, Elastic has dramatically reduced the storage footprint of log data in Elasticsearch by up to 65%. This allows you to store more observability and security data without exceeding your budget while keeping all data accessible and searchable. L…

We'll always recommend the latest released version, because it has all of our newest features and bug fixes. Our latest release is 8.17.2 and you can read all about the new release [here](https://www.elastic.co/blog/elastic-stack-8-17-2-released).

Do you have any sort of Elatsicsearch installation right now?

As others have written, if you are starting from scratch, you are in almost all cases going to be suggested to use the most current vendor release.

There _might_ be reasons why you would want to use a different release, e.g. compatibility with something else in your environment, but you'd need to supply some info on restrictions you have.

I don't follow this sentence at all.

Go with the latest version. In place upgrading via [rolling restart](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/restart-cluster.html) works well, and if you are using the cloud offerings very easy. Having said that, personally, when 9.0.x comes out I will wait until 9.1.x before upgrading. That's not a knock on elasticsearch, but rather I do that for all software (Microsoft, Apple, etc).
