# Reduce Elastic search Default Shards

Hello Folks,

I am looking to reduce the default shard count of 5 to 2 for all the indexes in our elasticsearch search cluster. I am looking for the below.

1. Where and how to change this default value, so that going forward any new index will have shard count as 5 and replica as 1 .

Any steps or best practices to achieve above will definitely help us,
