Hi everyone,

I'm a developer at Rackspace Hosting in San Francisco. On 28. March
we're hosting a hackday on and with Elastic Search.

```
```

In the past it was useful to have tech talks in the morning (useful
for hackers), as well as after-work tech talks, followed by demos and
socializing.

In the upcoming week we'll put up videos from last month's node.js
hackday to give y'all an idea of how it goes.

Please email me talk proposals if you're interested in giving one, or
if you have questions or ideas.

I know this is short notice for a geographically dispersed community,
but would be great nonetheless to have a good turn out.

Thanks,
Lucy.

Sounds fun but it is during the week. I guess you don't expect many
employed people to stop by!

We get a different crowd for the weekdays than the weekends.

Does your company offer other investments in developers? Hackdays are
useful training for:

- Learning new technology
- Working with experts (we go out of our way to invite contributors
to give tech talks; I admit in this case that I don't have connections
in the Elasticsearch community, so we'll see what happens)
- Thinking creatively
- Developing end-to-end skills and understandings (eg, maybe one
doesn't normally do frontend work, but through dabbling one then works
more efficiently with designers)
- Designing and implementing under a time pressure
- Getting stuff done

I'm crossing my fingers for you to convince your manager :-/
