# Restricting user to confluence document in elastic workplace search

I have integrated confluence connector with Elasticsearch and set up Document-level permissions.

I mapped confluence user ID to a Workplace Search username and did a sync

But my get api external returns empty permission list

Something that trips up a lot of folks is that you don't use the Workplace Search username, but the _elasticsearch_ username. This documentation helps you find the right username: [How to find the \_elasticsearch\_username attribute value](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/workplace-search/current/workplace-search-document-permissions.html#workplace-search-document-permissions-find-elasticsearch-username)

Note that these usernames are not always human-readable, but may be random strings/numbers.
