# Role of coordination nodes in cluster

Hi All,  
we have cluster of 17 nodes running elasticsearch 2.4.6 (outdated!).  
we have 10 data nodes of i3.2xlarge, 3 master nodes m3.xlarge, 4 corrdinating nodes again m3.xlarge.

out of these 4 corrdiantion nodes we have kept 2 dedicated for write and 2 for read.

so question is, does having coordinating nodes add any value? or should I start using any of data nodes for same purpose?

this will save infra/operations cost for us.
