In case of rolling upgrade,

> **[Rolling upgrades | Elasticsearch Reference \[7.10\] | Elastic](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/rolling-upgrades.html)**

_"In the unlikely case of a network malfunction during the upgrade process that isolates all remaining old nodes from the cluster, you must take the old nodes offline and upgrade them to enable them to join the cluster"_

This scenario is applicable to master nodes only? I do not see a reason why data nodes getting isolated will cause any issue.
