# Scale down cluster recommendations

Hello,  
we made a demo setup of Elasticsearch cluster on k8s consisting of 2 ingest nodes, 3 data nodes and 3 master nodes. As we bought the platinum license valid for only 3 nodes now we will need to scale cluster down and if I understand correctly the licensing we need to get rid of eg. all of the master nodes and make data nodes master-eligible (ingest nodes do not count into license right?).

What would be the recommended approach for such down scaling and is the 2 ingest / 3 master-data nodes optimal?

That really comes down to how you use your cluster and the load you have on it.
