When a search query is executed does elasticsearch go to each node to query for the term? Only the nodes which hold shards of the index you query are consulted. Replica shards are consulted in a round-robin fashion. You can control this with the preference setting [http://www.elasticsearch.org/guide/reference/api/search/preference/](http://www.elasticsearch.org/guide/reference/api/search/preference/) Each network operation "slows down" responses, yes (if you name 4-5ms a slow down). This is balanced out with the higher concurrency level which executes queries faster because shards are smaller, so, the more nodes you add, you can ignore this effect.
