# Service environment vs different service name

I am setting up APM and I am wondering why I should use the environment option instead of just using different service names.

For example environment production and test or service name service-production and service-test?

Hi and welcome to the forum!  
If you have a multi-service deployment, it makes sense to use the same service names in each environment, then being able to filter for all services based on the environment. For example, you could view the entire [service map](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/kibana/current/service-maps.html#service-maps) for each environment.

Thanks for the quick response. That sounds reasonable. I think I will use the same names and then the environment feature.
