# Setting passwords in elasticsearch cluster

I have a working cluster

"cluster\_name" : "elk",  
"status" : "green",  
"timed\_out" : false,  
"number\_of\_nodes" : 3,  
"number\_of\_data\_nodes" : 3,  
"active\_primary\_shards" : 3,  
"active\_shards" : 6,  
"relocating\_shards" : 0,  
"initializing\_shards" : 0,  
"unassigned\_shards" : 0,  
"delayed\_unassigned\_shards" : 0,  
"number\_of\_pending\_tasks" : 0,  
"number\_of\_in\_flight\_fetch" : 0,  
"task\_max\_waiting\_in\_queue\_millis" : 0,  
"active\_shards\_percent\_as\_number" : 100.0

I want to password Protect so i enabled xpack security

# Use a descriptive name for your cluster:

# 

cluster.name: elk  
xpack.security.enabled: true  
xpack.security.transport.ssl.enabled: true  
#discovery.type: single-node

When I go set my passwords I get a cluster error.

./elasticsearch-setup-passwords interactive

Failed to determine the health of the cluster running at [http://10.10.10.A:9200](http://10.10.10.A:9200)  
Unexpected response code [503] from calling GET [http://10.10.10.A:9200/\_cluster/health?pretty](http://10.10.10.A:9200/_cluster/health?pretty)  
Cause: master\_not\_discovered\_exception

It is recommended that you resolve the issues with your cluster before running elasticsearch-setup-passwords.  
It is very likely that the password changes will fail when run against an unhealthy cluster.

Not sure what setting I have wrong.
