# Single large cluster or multiple smaller clusters with remote search

We migrated from ES 5.6 with one large cluster hosting 2TB of daily indices and things were working pretty good to 6 smaller ES 7.1 clusters with remote cluster search. We've noticed that the performance was not so great, so I was wondering if there's a general rule when it comes to scenario like this - one large cluster or multiple smaller clusters doing remote search.
