# Switching from Data Node to Master Node at Runtime

I would like to know if I can switch my data node to master node at runtime and what would be the consequences of doing the same .

The idea is once this initial small instance gets exhausted, I would scale to a more space efficient box and convert the existing data node to master node.

I don't believe that is a setting you can modify without a restart.
