# Update license needs a restart? (Elastic version 6.8.14)

Hi,  
according the documentation from 7.17 to 8.3:

\*\*_"Licenses are provided as a JSON file and have an effective date and an expiration date. You cannot install a new license before its effective date. **License updates take effect immediately and do not require restarting Elasticsearch."** _

Update license on a 6.8.14 version, it's the same?

Yes, you can check it in the [documentation](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/6.8/update-license.html) for version 6.8.

Thank you @leandrojmp .

I had looked at this document [https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/kibana/6.8/managing-licenses.html](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/kibana/6.8/managing-licenses.html) and there was no reference to restart
