Hi there,

We currently run on ES 0.90.5 and are willing to upgrade to the latest
version within a couple of weeks. I have already read the release notes,
and apart from a minor Lucene upgrade to 4.0.6 there's not much that seems
to be in the way of doing a roling upgrade.

Is there anything I missed, or is it simply possible by flipping over one
node at a time? And even being able to downgrade if something goes wrong?

Best regards,

You can do a rolling upgrade. You should turn off shard reallocation
during that process though. The only way to go back if there is a problem
is to restore from backup/rebuild from scratch. Once the new version of
Elasticsearch starts writing to the index it'll create segments that can't
be read by the old version.

I know this was probably added automatically but sending this kind of text
to a mailing is hilarious.

Hi Nikolas,

Thank you for your swift reply. Restoring would be not such a big deal as
we have backups in place.

The mail footer is indeed added automatically, haha 😉

0.90.9 uses Lucene 4.6 which is a pretty significant feature update.

I was wondering if you technically could downgrade so long as you don't write or optimize. Not that I suggest it, but it would be neat to know

Thanks Jörg, it was not such of the features, but more like not breaking
things.
The current feature set of ES in 0.90.5 is sufficient at this moment, so
the only beneficial would be related to stability, performance, etc.

@Nik: it would indeed be interesting. If this would be the case it might be
better to "freeze" the cluster and perform the upgrade. Test a couple of
things and "unfreeze" again.
