# Upgrade index file format

Hi! Could you help me please? I upgraded elasticsearch to 0.90 and I would
like to move index to new lucene 4 file format. How can I do that? Maybe
elasticsearch will do that itself after reindex?

I think that Optimize API will do it.
Be aware that it's a costly operation.

Note, Lucene 4 can read your lucene 3 index so you don't have to upgrade
them and can do it over time.
