# Using Marvel instead of Kibana 3

In the past we used Kibana 3 to quickly generate diagrams from our
Elasticsearch indices.
Now after discovering Marvel, I wonder if we could import all of our old
dashboards from Kibana to Marvel and use it together with the
Elasticsearch cluster statistics from Marvel into one tool?
Can we see Marvel as "successor" of Kibana?
Or is it a better way to run Marvel only for the ES statistics and use a
separated Marvel installation to display our own data?

After looking at Marvel since the day it was released,
I don't see Marvel as a replacement for Kibana 3, Marvel is a very attractive implementation based on Kibana 3.
And, don't overlook that Marvel is free only for running 5 nodes. If you're running more nodes, there is a cost (although very reasonable).
You didn't say what version of Kibana you're runninng, if you're running Kibana 2 I don't even know if there is a way to migrate your panels to Kibana 3 (and Marvel).

I probably would not simply because the cluster containing your Marvel
metrics may not necessarily be the same cluster/data that you want to do
your Kibana analytics on (and also Marvel production licensing is
independent from Kibana). BTW Marvel is indeed built on Kibana, and just
FYI, Marvel is free for development use, and in production there is a very
reasonable licensing cost associated with it. If you’re an Elasticsearch
subscription customer, you get a full license to use Marvel included with
your subscription package.
