# Using zip / tar to backup elastic

I have elastic 1.0.0 machine that i'd like to backup.  
is backing up the data directory with zip / tar enough?

can I just extract it on a new machine in case of problems?

You can try, but it's not guaranteed to work.

I read about the snapshots & restore methods. As per my understanding the snapshot will contains a complete data of an indices.

But I have to configure this snapshot in one node or every node in the cluster????

Now I am using 2.3.3. I want to take backup for the cloud. But here [https://github.com/elastic/elasticsearch-cloud-azure#azure-repository](https://github.com/elastic/elasticsearch-cloud-azure#azure-repository) I have only upto es-1.7. Is there any other way to take backup for the cloud ????
