# What happens (or should happen) if your elasticsearch configurations don't match?

I'm wondering if anyone knows (can't easily test right now) what happens if
your elasticsearch configurations on different nodes don't match:
e.g.
if you have index.number\_of\_replicas: 0 on one node, and 1 on another -
will replicas be made, or not?
Is there any reasonable use of having different values here?

My guy says some config will matter on each node (minimum master nodes) and the rest will only use the master's value.

Certainly settings such as shards and replicas will not matter, they'll
take what the original master node sets them up as. Shards and Replica
settings can be set per index you see.
