# What is better, update or install from the beginning?

Hello, good day, I have an elasticsearch cluster with version 7.17. I would like to know what is most convenient? upgrade the cluster to version 8.10 or perform a new installation with version 8.10 and only migrate the data from version 7.17 to 8.10.

Hi @efrainMZ,
Probably depends upon what you consider inconvenient. If you following the [instructions](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/7.17/rolling-upgrades.html) to upgrade from 7.17 to 8.x it should go well.
If you don't want to do an upgrade there are other options to [migrate data](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/cloud/current/ec-migrating-data.html).
