# What is the difference b/w Reindexing and Split index

Just reading something about elasticsearch how it route documents,i saw a term called Split API.What is the use Split API,we have reindex api we have clone api.Want to know the difference between in all this could not understand from the documentation.

Here's what each page from the docs says for each;

> Splits an existing index into a new index with more primary shards.

> **[Clone index API | Elasticsearch Guide \[8.11\] | Elastic](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/indices-clone-index.html)**

> Clones an existing index.

Is that clearer?
