# What permission is needed to refresh field lists?

Hi Nick,

I think the user would need the built-in `kibana_user` role, plus a role that gives them `read` and `view_index_metadata` on the index that they're refreshing the fields on (same as if they are creating a new index pattern).  
Are you trying to determine if they can do it with less than those? It might be possible if they only have `view_index_metadata` and not `read` on the data perhaps?
