# Wildcard queries \_index field

We've just upgraded ES from 7.12.0 to 7.17.13 and since then we seem to be unable to run wildcard queries on the \_index field. Is this expected? Is this something we can work around?
We have index patterns in Kibana with leading wildcards, but we want to support users to narrow their searches down further with wildcards on \_index through the Kibana query language.
