Exactly! The ordering of your config in Logstash is fairly meaningless once Logstash starts. In reality your pipeline looks like the below: [logstashpipeline] Hope that helps Mike Edit: As pointed out by Magnus below, ordering of filters is important; just not inputs/outputs
