Site Search data resides in the US. But there are POPs around the world to help mitigate latency and reduce SSL roundtrip times. If you have a configurable VPN that can connect through Australia, your best bet might be to start a trial and do some testing to ensure performance is up to your standards.

It does -- all search requests go through a CDN. The CDN points-of-presence don't contain any cached data. Their purpose is to significantly improve secure connection time to the primary data centre, which is US based.
