Duplicated logs

I am streaming logs to Elasticsearch through filebeat and logstash. Supposedly, if the the logs in the file is updated, it will only do subsequent updates and not push the existing logs (before the update). But right now it is doing it. So when I have 10 existing logs and there is an update of 2 logs. The total logs I see in my Elasticsearch is not 12 but 22 logs.

The default behavior is to ship only the new logs.
May be you changed the behavior with some settings?

A little more details would maybe help to find this out.

I see...

My logstash conf file is like this

input {
  beats {
    port => 5044
  }
}

filter {
  grok {
    match => {  "message" => '%{IP:client_ip} - - \[%{HTTPDATE:access_time}\] "%{WORD:http_method} %{URIPATH:request_page} HTTP/%{NUMBER:http_version}" %{NUMBER:response_code} %{NUMBER:response_size} "-" "%{GREEDYDATA:user_agent}"'}>
  }
 }

output {
    if [@metadata][_id]{
    elasticsearch {
      hosts => ["http://elasticsearch:9200"]
      document_id => "%{[@metadata][_id]}"
      index => "filebeat-test-%{+YYYY.MM.dd}"
      action => "update"
      scripted_upsert => true
      ssl_certificate_verification => false
     }
  } else {
    elasticsearch {
      hosts => ["http://elasticsearch:9200"]
      index => "filebeat-test-%{+YYYY.MM.dd}"
      ssl_certificate_verification => false
    }
  }
}

And beats?

this is my filebeat yaml file

How are you updating this file? Are you recreating it?

Right now we are testing by manually adding the logs to the deevan.log using vim. However, later on we are going to stream the DNS logs directly from the server.

This may be your issue, depending on the vim version or settings on .vimrc it will make a copy of the file you are editing and delete the old one, which will change the inode.

Filebeat tracks files based on the inode, so if this is happening, filebeat will interpret the file as a new file and will read it again.

You can verify it using ls -i /var/log/deevan.log before and after you edit the file to see if the inode changes.

That must be it. After editing the file, the inode changes.

Thank you
