Failed to log events to logstash

Hello,

I just configured ELK stack on a server and winlogbeat with sysmon on a windows 10 computer.

The objective is to forward windows logs to logstash.

Unfortunately, I have an issue because no logs are forwarded to logstash on port 5044 (network port is opnened and working).

When I execute the following command: ./winlogbeat -e
I have the following error:

ERROR [publisher_pipeline_output] pipeline/output.go:106 Failed to connect to backoff(async(tcp://192.168.100.100:5044)): write tcp 192.168.100.3:50086->192.168.100.100:5044: wsasend: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.

When I execute the following command: ./winlogbeat setup -e
I have the following error:

ERROR instance/beat.go:932 Exiting: Index management requested but the Elasticsearch output is not configured/enabled
Exiting: Index management requested but the Elasticsearch output is not configured/enabled

Did someone already had the same issue ?

Thank you.

@pchar Have you loaded the index template in Elasticsearch? See this link:

One other thing. In your Winlogbeat.yml you have:

However, if you are using Logstash output, I do not believe the beat can manage/load indexes. You'll need to do that manually as I posted above or have Logstash do it.

Thanks for your reply.

I will have a look.
For information, when I deactivate TLS on the logstash config it works. I do not get any errors anymore and my windows logs are then available in Kibana.

Hmm. That would seem to indicate an issue with the TLS config. Are you seeing any related logs in Logstash or Elasticsearch?

Can you post your config for Logstash/Elasticsearch/Winlogbeat? That may help to narrow down the problem.

Hello,

My logstash input config is :

input {
  beats {
    port => 5044
    ssl => true
    ssl_certificate => "/etc/pki/tls/certs/ELK.crt"
    ssl_key => "/etc/pki/tls/private/ELK.key"
  }
}

My logstash output config is :

output {
  elasticsearch {
    hosts => ["localhost:9200"]
    sniffing => true
    manage_template => false
    index => "%{[@metadata][beat]}-%{+YYYY.MM.dd}"
    document_type => "%{[@metadata][type]}"
  }
}

My elasticsearch.yml is the following:

path.data: /var/lib/elasticsearch
path.logs: /var/log/elasticsearch
network.host: localhost
http.port:9200

When I activate the ssl, I have the following error in my log:

caused  by: javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException: error:100000f7:SSL routines:OPENSSL_internal:WRONG_VERSION_NUMBER

Do you not have TLS enabled between Logstash and Elasticsearch? Or is it enabling it there when you see the issue?

Can you post your Winlogbeat config as well?

TLS is not activated between logstash and elasticshearch.

Regarding the index I have many errors similar to this one:
Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid format:

Few examples below:

Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid format: "PowerEvent handled successfully ..."
Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid format: "File"
Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid format: "0ff1ce15-a989-479d-af46-f275c6370663" is malformed at "ff1ce15-a989-479d-af46-f275c6370663"
Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid format: "192.168.56.33" is malformed at ".168.56.33"

I had a look to check what fields are related to these strings and apparently it is linked to the fields winlog.event_data.param*

@pchar My apologies, I realize now that you had already provided your Winlogbeat config.

I am not sure on the invalid format errors unfortunately, but I believe it is unrelated to the Winlogbeat > Logstash with TLS activated issue. It may potentially have something to do with your Logstash filters / Elasticsearch index mappings.

Regarding the other issue, may be a long shot, but is your certificate Base64 encoded? I believe that may be all Logstash will accept. The config looks fine so I can't help but to wonder if it's an issue with the certificate/key. Also, if the key is password protected, you should specify ssl_key_passphrase within the beats input in your Logstash pipeline.

I found the issue.
When I generated my cert from the openssl config file certain required field were not properly filled. I now generate the certificate with static data. The certificate is now filled with all required information and the connection from winlogbeat to logstash is working smoothly.

@coinology thanks for your help.
