Increase .gz compression in file output (s3 output is better)?

Hi,

Is it possible to increase the compression ratio for .gz files in the file output plugin? I noticed the s3 output plugin can get up three times smaller file sizes with the exact same data, it would be great if the same level of compression was possible with the file output plugin.
