Logstash binary as service is not running on CentOS 7 - SOLVED

Dear All,

I have installed latest logstash for CentOS 7 as per the official documents. When i run logstash

sudo service logstash start

It just doesn't work , no log files (even if i set the log level as debug in logstash.yml) nothing in /var/log/logstash/logstash-plain.log.

However if i run it like below
#sudo bin/logstash --path.settings /etc/logstash -f /etc/logstash/conf.d/01-twitter.conf
it works fine and start generating the logs. Seems some issue with starting logstash as service?
Can someone please help.

What was the problem ? I'm in the same case.

samir I had issues in the conf file i created. If you are having issues paste your config file here and I will be able to advise you.

ok thank you. Here is my logstash config file :

Hi,

I do not need logstash config but need to see the .conf file you have created in /etc/logstash/conf.d

Ah ok sorry.

Here is my file .conf :

input {
   beats {
          port => 5044
         }
      }

filter  {

grok {
        break_on_match => false
	match => {"message" => "(.*?)(?<ConnID>[0-9a-f]{16})(.*)" }
	match => {"message" => "^%{TIMESTAMP_ISO8601:event_timestamp}"}
	match => { "message" => "(.*?)(AttributeCallUUID\t)'(?<CallUUID>[0-9A-Z]{32})(.*)" }
	match => {"message" => "iReturn\(LOCAL\) <- INTEGER: %{NUMBER:Return}"}
	  }
grok {
        match => {"message" => "(?<Suivi>(?:^|\n)[^\n]*send\sto\sts[^\n]*(?:\n|$))"}
        add_tag => ["Parsed"]
        }
date  {
          match => ["event_timestamp","YYYY-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ss.SSS"]
          target => "@timestamp"
          locale => "en"
          timezone => "Europe/Paris"
         }
if "Parsed" not in [tags] {
		drop {}
                            }

output  {
	 elasticsearch {
			 hosts => ["10.58.123.222:9200"]
	                 manage_template => false
	                 index => "cofbe-%{+YYYY.MM.dd}"
	                 }
        }

When I run this configuration file with the following command it works very well.
It's just when I run logstash as a service that it does nothing at all.

can you please share the logstash logs as well? please do run the logstash as service and then do a tail -f /var/log/logstash/logstash-plain

I have run logstash as service but my logstash-plain file is empty ! there is nothing.
One strange thing is when I check the use of my CPU, logstash consumes a lot !! But I don't receive anything on Elasticsearch.

give it 10 minutes to start showing the logs also the service you are collecting logs for make sure its generating the events

Always nothing.

you sure user logstash have the permission to the file you are collecting the log from?

Yes I just check. it has access to all files

how did you give the access to logstash user ? can you show me the output of

ls -l

Here is the output of ls -l for /etc/logstash :

please read what i have asked for .... I wanted to know the permissions of the file you are collecting the event. For example if you are collecting the apache error log events then you need to show me the permissions of /var/log/httpd/error_log ...

I collecte logs that are on a remote windows server and that I send with filebeat to the logstash server. But when I run logstash with the command logstash -f file.conf it works fine so i guess it has the permissions. Otherwise I don't see how to check exactly.

can you please add
stdout { codec => rubydebug }
}
in output section and restart logstash and see if it generates any log. Also make sure in logstash,yml the log level set to debug

My log level is Info (default).

I add stdout { codec => rubydebug } in output, and restart logstash as a service. But there generate nothing. They just told me that logstash is running.

I check logstash-plain.log and also nothing.

change the log level to debug and restart logstash

Nothing change ...
