Logstash Ruby DateTime.parse error

Hi i am trying to execute the below code.

filter{
if [type] == 'date'{
ruby {
        init => "@regex= /[^0-9a-zA-Z]/"
        code => "
        require 'date'
        require 'time'
        event.set('var_str', DateTime.parse(event.get('date')));
        puts var_str
        "
    }
}
}

But i am receiving the below error:

When i execute this is regular ruby debugger, i am able to get the result.
Is there something i am doing wrong?
