Based on that statement it could be that even if node-1 was the leader for some topic partitions, it was not the manager of the consumer groups leadership and hence we were are not seeing it collect any consumergroup data.

Right, this is what I'm assuming is happening.

For doing some math at ingest time, There is this new logstash filter in the making which I hope can be used/scripted to correlate and precompute some consumer lag stats for kafka.
