Aggregate derived Index requirement and populating data

I have a 5 % scenario that I need to run an aggregate query across all my records in the index and that query is taking good amount of time for that request. We were thinking of creating a derived Index of the aggregate information that we are looking, is there a good way to populate this aggregate index based on the data changes in the main index ?

Any idea ; advice is welcome
