Collapse does not work if the field value is empty string

we have fields
product_name, product_category.

We do collapse on product_category. we have lots of documents that product_category=""
when we do collapse it collapses all the empty product_category into one.
The expectation is the collapse would treat all the empty product_category is unique
or something like conditional collapse (i.e collapse only if the product_category is not empty)

Any idea ???
