I don't have a super great understanding of it either but
http://lucene.apache.org/core/4_0_0/core/org/apache/lucene/search/NumericRangeQuery.html#precisionStepDeschelped.
keep in mind that that is lucene documentation so the defaults
won't match Elasticsearch and some other specific may vary (though I don't
know them).

If you do cultivate a really good understanding of it then please reply and
enlighten me.
