Delete indices

I am using an ES cluster (2 clients, 5 data nodes, 3 master nodes) with mounted volumes to NFS...
When I delete old indices (using sense) I see they are actually deleted, but after I restart the ES cluster, I see that the old indices come back again with red status and the explain API says something like: "unassigned_shards exist in the cluster state, but cannot be found in the cluster itself"

Are you running NFS directly, or you have LUNs that you mount on the OS that are then formatted to whatever.

The 5 data nodes write directly to NFS that inside NetApp

Is the Netapp doing anything special then? If you delete them from Elasticsearch they should be gone.
