The core lucene engine mentions of indexing speed of 150 GB/hour. Are there similar benchmarks documented somewhere for Elasticsearch? what is the speed tested for elasticsearch ? with assumptions like 30KB each document ?

yes, we run nightly benchmarks of Elasticsearch with different data sets and publish the results at https://elasticsearch-benchmarks.elastic.co/

All the data sets and the tooling is open source. The tool that runs the benchmarks is called Rally.
