ElasticSearch on Hubblestack

Newbie in so many ways... Please help if you can...

Has anyone here used ElasticSearch ("E") on hubblestack?
Can we use "E" without installing Kibana and Logstash?

We are getting the following error:
KeyError: u'elasticsearch.index_exists'

I suspect there are some setup steps we have not completed.
