I notice that ELK is supported on a number of Linux platforms but is there a recommended OS for first time use? I want to build an ELK stack as separate vms.
there is support and thus testing on a variety of images, there is no particular favourite (I'd just try to integrate with my existing infrastructure). The Docker images for example are using UBI or CentOs7, see https://github.com/elastic/elasticsearch/blob/master/distribution/docker/build.gradle#L29
