service elasticsearch status
shows me:
failed (Result: exit-code)
...
main ERROR Null object returned for RollingFile in Appenders.
I couldn't find another thread which solves this issue.

I commented out this line in the elasticsearch.yml and it worked:
path.logs: /var/log/elasticsearch/elasticsearch.log
