Errors starting up elasticsearch

I'm trying to get elasticsearch running, and failing at the first hurdle.

When I run ./bin/elasticsearch -f I get the following errors:

2013-03-12 18:43:34,723][INFO ][node ] [Terminatrix]
{0.20.5}[1936]: initializing ...
[2013-03-12 18:43:34,727][INFO ][plugins ] [Terminatrix]
loaded [], sites []
[2013-03-12 18:43:36,604][ERROR][bootstrap ] {0.20.5}:
Initialization Failed ...

  1. NullPointerException[null]

Here's my java version

java -version
java version "1.7.0_09-icedtea"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (rhel-2.3.7.1.el6_3-x86_64)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.7-b01, mixed mode)

Can anyone help?

Hey,

can you try and run elasticsearch with a java version downloaded from
oracle and check if the exception still occurs? Just to rule this out...
Anything else in the log file after the NullPointerException?

Very interesting. Can you increase the loglevel to "trace" and send the
output? Thanks!

I've increased the logging.

Full disclosure, this is running on OpenVZ. running on a physical hosts
seems to run without issue:

Yes. I think, as a workaround, if you disable (remove) the lib/sigar
folder, then you can start ES without NPE.

Sigar is optional as long as you do not depend on CPU, OS, and network
interface monitoring.

My experience with initializing Sigar on virtual machines is not good.
E.g. in a Solaris Zone, I observed it can't read from network interface
with virtual IPs and crashes. Maybe this is similar to OpenVZ.
Interestingly I just learned when ES is started from removable media,
Sigar init may also crash, and returns a null object.

On the other hand I wonder why this is reported on 0.20.5 and not
0.19/0.18, the NPE must have been exposed due to a recent code change.
