I am currently researching on distributed search and indexing.I am
interested in running ES over hbase. How far is this feasible? and how do
you rate the performance improvement over live projects like Katta and Lily?

You will need to get HBase data and index it into elasticsearch. This is similar to what Lily does, only Lily works with solr. Katta is different, aimed at creating Lucene index files out of hadoop map/reduce jobs, but as far as I know, they are immutable once you do it.
