Example for how logstash works

does anyone have a resource regarding how logstash works.
I have a high level understanding, but when I try to implement a configuration file, all I get is errors. The only thing I have working the way it is supposed to, is the input from stdin{} and output to stdout{} with no filter.

Any documentation or information on how to set up and get logstash working?
