Failed to start Elasticsearch

Hello.

I'm having a problem with Elasticsearch, and I don't know much about Linux. It doesn't help!
To run a mapping application (GeoNetwork), I need an instance of Elasticsearch. So I downloaded version 8.4.3 in tar.gz format, which I unpacked in /var/lib/.
When I try to start the instance (sudo ./bin/elasticsearch), I get the message "ERROR: Elasticsearch exited unexpectedly".
I don't see anything in the logs that would give me a lead.

For info, in parallel there are 2 instances of tomcat running on 8180 and 8280, with 2 mapping applications.

The problem may come from there? Do you have any idea?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Welcome!

What is your Linux OS?

Did you check the installation documentation? The recommended way for Linux is here or Install Elasticsearch with Debian Package | Elasticsearch Guide [8.4] | Elastic or Install Elasticsearch with RPM | Elasticsearch Guide [8.4] | Elastic.

Thanks you !

I use the Windowsfx 10 Free Edition Cinnamon.
And yes, I followed the steps on this page : Install Elasticsearch from archive on Linux or MacOS | Elasticsearch Guide [8.4] | Elastic.

if I need to, I can install another linux if you advise me to.

Never heard about that.

Anyway. If it's unix compatible, you should read the first link.

The commands in the documentation are:

wget https://artifacts.elastic.co/downloads/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-8.4.3-linux-x86_64.tar.gz
wget https://artifacts.elastic.co/downloads/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-8.4.3-linux-x86_64.tar.gz.sha512
shasum -a 512 -c elasticsearch-8.4.3-linux-x86_64.tar.gz.sha512
tar -xzf elasticsearch-8.4.3-linux-x86_64.tar.gz
cd elasticsearch-8.4.3/
./bin/elasticsearch

If this dos not work, please share the output.

David,

I have just installed an Ubuntu VM to make sure it is compatible.
I installed Java 8 (openjdk 8), Apache Tomcat 9, Geoserver, GeoNetwork, everything is OK.

I try to install Elasticsearch, I follow the procedure (wget, wget, shasum, tar, cd), no problem, but when I run the "./bin/elasticsearch" command, I get the same message as before:
ERROR: Elasticsearch exited unexpectedly

Could it be a rights issue? I run the command as a normal user

Good. I've made some progress: after moving the Elasticsearch folder from my home folder to /var/lib/elasticsearch, and playing with permissions a bit, it looks like something is happening.

After loading a whole bunch of modules, I now see this kind of message scrolling all the time, and http://localhost:9200 returns an error.

Is this normal?

Please avoid sharing screenshots of log errors, share the plaintext using the preformatted button, the </> in the text editor.

Screenshots are hard to read sometimes and some people may not even be able to see them.

In your case your log tells that you are sending plaintext request to an endpoint that is using TLS, it will not work, you need to send requests using https not http.

Hello Leandro.

Ok, I understand about the captures, sorry.

As for sending the request, I didn't do anything but run Elasticsearch from the command line with :

./bin/elasticsearch

Is it a question of settings that I missed? A problem with the VM?

No, something is sending logs to your Elasticsearch using http, it needs to use https.

Something.... OK !
I have only installed GeoServer and GeoNetwork, and both services are stopped. So I have no idea where this is coming from.
Pfff that's a complicated thing

EDIT : hum ok, it's when I go on http://localhost:9200 to see if Elasticsearch is running.
