How does one get rid of some of the labels and retain some. Below I want to retain the vertical labels and get rid of the horizontal ones (status : Descending ; where status is the name of a term)

I don't think there is a supported way to do this, but you might be able to "hide" certain labels by setting a custom label of a "zero-width space":
Kibana will render your custom label instead of the default label, but since you've specified a label that is visually empty, it should just disappear.
If you are using a windows machine, try to find this character in your Character Map.
From a Mac, open the character viewer, as shown in the screenshot above.
