Has anyone seen automatic heap sizing work?

All postings I've seen are complaints where it doesn't. If it works for you, can you explain how it works? Does it start with the default 1G heap and grow? Does it set a reasonable heap size > 1G at startup?

My test nodes, with master, data, ingest and remote cluster client, on a 12G host, allocate 1G heap. That seems lower than it should allocate.
