@shinyke - When u have say shards of max size 50 G, you are talking about shards say 10 for .5 TB of data. 10 is not big. Remember u do have limit per node (depends on ur query/index characteristics) on how much data u can have in a node to effectively suppoer queries with a reasonable performance.
btw - my .5 TB of data is an example!
