Indexes don't really run out of space like that, nodes can though.
However if you are using datastreams, then they use ILM, and your indices should be being removed automatically.
is the Index Lifecycle Policies for how long you can keep the data stream before it will be delete, correct. ?
Correct.
You can check what is being used for it in Kibana - Stack Management > Index Management.
