Is embedding Elasticsearch *for testing* discouraged?

An August 2016 blog post explained that embedding Elasticsearch is “inherently unsafe and not recommended for production” and would no longer be supported. Would someone clarify for me whether embedding for automated tests is also deprecated/unsupported? I suspect that it is, but I’d appreciate knowing for certain.

Not really, no. You'd go through so much work to get a half way proper cluster set up and it wouldn't be quite right. The maven plugin should work. You ought to be able to use the Elasticsearch gradle plugin if you use gradle but the docs for that aren't as good.
